2019 StoneScape - Bay of Skaill

ARTIST STATEMENT

I take inspiration from a 400 million year old journey cast in stone. Growing up in Caithness, I was surrounded by the county’s flagstone, it’s heritage, and the vast natural landscape composed during it’s formation. I see sky, sea and land in the stone’s colours, textures and gradients. Through digital processes, I create landscapes using photographs of Caithness stone captured from various sites including harbours, beaches, paving slabs and ancient standing stones. Through my work I aim to encourage a deeper understanding and appreciation of the connection between people and land.

BAY OF SKAILL

T H E E X P E R I E N C E . . . After visiting Skara Brae, I captured this piece with my husband and daughter in the foreground and St Peter’s Kirk in the distance. Crouching down by the shore looking for treasures is Megan’s favourite place to be. We found two huge Groatie Buckie shells that day while wondering if the people of Skara Brae would’ve once admired a similar view.

T H E S T O N E . . . Textures used to create the land in this StoneScape were sourced from a standing stone at the Ring of Brodgar in Orkney. The sky’s texture was captured from a boulder on Thurso Beach in Caithness representing the geological and archaeological similarities shared between Orkney and Caithness.

I see sky, sea and land in the colours, textures and gradients of Caithness flagstone paving slabs and drystone walls. Through digital processes, I capture photographs of the county’s stone using them to reconstruct original photographs of landscapes.
